About Indian Forest Service (IFS)

India is about 23% covered with forests. With almost quarter of the country’s land mass made up of forests it is extremely important to ensure safety and conservation of forest resources. Citing the need to conserve resources of the forest, the Indian Forest service was established in 1966 by the Government of India. The Indian Forest Service along with Indian Police Service and Indian Administrative Service is one of the three All India Services. The main aim of the Indian Forest resources is regeneration, conservation and protection of the forests in India. Apart from this the Indian Forest Service also implements the National Forest Policy and conducts scientific research on forest health, resources, management, etc.

Employees for the Indian Forest Service are usually recruited through Union Public Service Commission. Annually the UPSC conducts civil examinations to fill in the posts for the Forest Service. The exam is generally held in July. Applicants who qualify the written examination then appear for an interview.
