Indian Navy

The Indian Navy has a grand history starting from 1612 when a small local navy force was formulated by the British out of sheer necessity to combat the invading Portuguese. The first fleet was formed at Swally near Surat in Gujarat. Over a period of time, the wing got renamed several times like – the Bombay Marine, Her Majesty’s Indian Marine and The Royal Indian Marine. By the end of 1892 the group had 50 vessels and reportedly took active part in the First World War.

Sub Lieutenant D.N. Mukherji was the first Indian to join the Royal Indian Marine as an Engineer Officer in 1928. Again the Royal Indian Marine was re-organised into the Royal Indian Navy in 1934. The fleet also bagged the ‘King’s Colour’ the next year, in recognition of its tremendous services. By the end of II World War, the fleet had 117 combat vessels and 30,000 personnel. At the time of attaining Independence, The bitter partition post freedom left the Indian Navy divided into two parts. The prefix of ‘Royal’ was dropped from the Royal Indian Navy only in the year 1950, January 26th when India became a Republic. The first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy was Adm Sir Edward Parry, KCB who passed on the baton to Adm. Sir Mark Pizey, KBE, CB, DSI in 1951. Adm Pizey also became the first Chief of the Naval Staff in 1955. However the first Indian Chief of the Naval Staff was Vice Admiral R.D. Katari who assumed office on April 22, 1958.

Indian Navy fought its first full battle at the time of Goa Liberation in 1961 where in ‘Operation Vijay’ was successful in defeating the Portuguese Navy. The next war fought was with Pakistan in the year 1965. It was not very significant owing to the minimal scale of war. The major success came in the 1971 war with Pakistan again when Indian Navy successfully destroyed the Pakistani vessels completely. December 7th is celebrated as the Navy Day in memory of the memorable victory against Pakistan in 1971. Since then the Indian Navy is doing a commendable job in safeguarding the coastal region of the country and also giving a very useful hand to the UN in fighting the Somalian Sea Pirates. The present Chief of Navy staff is Vice Admiral Nirmal Kumar.
