IIST Post Doctoral Fellowship Programme – July 2011

Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates for admission to the Post Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) Programme starting in July 2011 in the areas of Avionics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth & Space Sciences.

Eligibility: 
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D in the relevant area and first class or equivalent in the Master’s Degree. Candidates who were awarded Ph.D before 01.07.2006 are not eligible to apply.

Age Limit: 32 years as on 30th June 2011. Age relaxation applicable as per Govt. of India Rules.

Nationality: Applicant should be an Indian citizen.

Research Fellowship: 
IIST-PDF Fellowship will be Rs. 40,000/- pm (all inclusive).
PDF Scholars will be required to assist the department in research and laboratory related activity.
The Fellows are encourages to publish their research findings in reputed journals jointly with collaborating faculty, following established practices of paper authorship and publications. At the end of the tenure the fellow will make a comprehensive monograph of the total research activity undertaken under the PDF programme.
During the tenure at IIST, the Post Doctoral Fellow will be governed by the leave and other administrative norms applicable to full time research scholars of IIST.

Application Procedure
Applications in the prescribed format will be received until 30th June 2011.
Applicants are required to send CV in the specific format and also submit a research proposal with in the frame work of the area advertised for the PDF. The research proposal should be of 3 to 5 pages and should contain the following information.
a)      brief statement of the problem
b)      aim of the research project
c)      review of relevant literature
d)      preparatory work of the candidate
e)      brief outline of the methodology and steps in the execution of the project
f)       relevant bibliography
3.  While preparing the research proposal the prospective candidates are advised to go through the specified area of PDRO placed at our website www.iist.ac.in. For any clarification in this regard the applicant may contact the concerned IIST faculty identified in the PDRO.

Duly filled application form along with attested copies of documents mentioned in the application form should be sent to The Administrative Officer, IIST, Valiamala Post, Thiruvananthapuram – 695547 with the superscription “Application for IIST PDF Programme”.
Last date for receipt of application form: 30th June 2011.

Selection procedure
Short listed applicants will be invited to present a seminar on the topic of research followed by discussion with a specialist committee.
The specialist committee will make their recommendation ranking the PDF applicants in each research area in the order of merit.
The PDF is initially awarded for one year and is extendable to a second year based on the review of the progress of the research work by the end of the first year by an expert committee.
Outstation candidates will be paid to and fro 3 AC class train fare by shortest route, or actual fare (whichever is lower) for attending the seminar / discussion.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology or IIST is India's national institute for the study and development of space science, located at Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was inaugurated on 14 September 2007 by Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman ISRO. IIST is sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under Department of Space, Government of India. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, is the Chancellor of IIST.

The institute was started functioning at Antennae Training Facility (ATF) Campus, under Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala. A state-of-the-art permanent campus is coming up near Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Valiyamala, Thiruvananthapuram with an observatory in the picturesque Ponmudi Hills, Thiruvanathapuram. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the permanent campus of IIST at Valiyamala on August 25, 2009. The Prime Minister was not present for the inauguration, but unveiled a plaque remotely from New Delhi through video conferencing. The Institute started functioning in its new campus from 15,August, 2010.
