Guwahati came with the combination of two Assamese words guwa (betal nut) and hat (market place). The city is surrounded by hills from the top, which looks like a cave, and the river Brahmaputra passes gives it perfect picture of an elephant. Many people believe the name was Guhahati which later change by the British Dynasty as Gauhati and later again it then changed to Guwahati.
