About University Grants Commission
The union government in the year 1965 set up a statutory organization by the name of University Grants Commission, popularly known as the UGC for the regularization of al the university related matters. This body dealt with all the matters from coordination, determination and maintenance of new and on going universities in the country. The other basic objective of the organization is to look after the standard of education being imparted in these universities. This is the organization which provides the recognition to an institution to function as a full fledged university in the country. No university can be accredited in the country without the recognition of UGC. It also helps to provide funds for government recognized universities and colleges as a part of the education subsidy.

The UGC functions from its head quarters in New Delhi and other six regional centers all across the countries in the places like Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Bangalore. This organization along with the similar body AICTE was under the threat to be knifed because of the charges like corruption and inefficiency but steps have been taken since then to improve their working which involved scraping up the university title from 44 different deemed universities from the country.

Initially proposed in 1946, UGC has to look into for 3 universities namely Aligarh, Delhi and Banaras, which grew to 10 universities in 1947. With newly attained independence and the chairmanship of Dr. S Radhakrishnan. The UGC was reconstituted on the format similar in UK. The UGC was finally inaugurated by late Shri Abul Kalam Azad, the minister for education then on 28 December 1953.

Still then it took some time for UGC to establish and was finally done in the year 1956 as the statutory body of Government of India. Today it is the prime body for higher education in the country but presently under the high scrutiny of the education sector.
